Rich is a gentleman I admired for one of the same reasons I admired John Rankin so much:  He LOVED to play football.  Later he was the reunion committee rep who refunded my reunion registration fee in 2001 without making me feel guilty for not attending due to spine surgery.  I finally had a reunion with him at our 2006 reunion at Drexelbrook where, after 40 years we had a chance to reminisce about the good old days and the game we loved--football.  At the time I didn't know it would be our last chance to reminisce.  I remember chatting with him about a gentleman we both admired, Coach Leonard.  I also remember how SHOCKED I was to hear of his passing from another reunion committee member, Earl Pensyl at our reunion party at the Springfield Country Club in 2011.  Rich Schmied I will always remember you.  With love from your bro.,  Carl Kannapel

Richie "Meats" was my best friend.  We went through Highland Park together, Beverly Hills together and UDHS together.  We set off to Bloomsburg together and Rich got pushed into some off-campus housing which I think led him to missing lots of classes.  Richie was my defender (I was a skinny little kid) and my confidante.  He was as strong as he was gentle and much smarter than most people knew.  He was understated and never did anything to impress anyone.  I missed the 50th reunion and I think the reason was, among others, that I couldn't stand to be there knowing that Rich wouldn't be there with us.  I have a few long letters that we shared and I shall treasure his words as I treasure his life.  He was #73 on the field and number 1 to everyone who knew him.  Bill Sanders
