Betty Ann, before she was Liz Anne, was my good friend through Highland Park.  I remember in second grade she stood about a head taller than I was.  She was a faster runner.  She was funnier.  She had it all together.  On Valentine's Day I gave her a tie clasp from my father.  I have no understanding as to why.  But she wore it graciously and put it on lapel of her blouses.  I think in first grade she also taught me how to tie my shoes.  Later she became my intermediary with all problems "female."  She understood "me" but she was one of "them."  It is so strange that my best friends of elementary school:  Rich Schmied, Betty Anne Robinson, and Billy Freislaben are all past.  I guess that is why I'm writing.  Without writing there is no immortality.
